Russia 2008

The breakup of the USSR in 1991 precipitated the creation of a centralized Russian nation with satellite countries in the Balkans and to the East. Since then Russia has struggled to establish a capitalist economy, suffering set backs from political and economic corruption and uncooperative internal states. Increasingly, however, Russia is participating within the global economic arean and influencing the direction of world politics, with both positive and negative impact. The future of Russia in the 21st century is the opic of the 2008 Academic Lecture Series. Our programs will include discussions on the upcoming Russian elections, U.S./Russian relations, the energy crisis and its impact on Russian oil, and Russian capitalism and business interests. Please join us in January to explore the puzzling, often frightening character of Russia today.
