Garden Club


The DCA Garden Club program will consist of lectures and hands-on workshops that will increase our horticultural knowledge, encourage our exploration into floral design and motivate us to be persistent advocates for environmental conservation.
All Garden Club members must be members of the DCA .
Annual dues are $25.00
The guest fee for all coffees and luncheons is $15.00

Responsibility of Membership

  • Be part of the hospitality team for at least one meeting during the year.
  • Participate in the Annual Plant Sale in May by donating time and donating six plants or $20.00
  • Submit to Bench/Horticulture Shows.
  • Donate time toward the maintenance of the grounds and formal garden.
  • Support the DCA Thrift Shop through tax-deductible contributions.

Field Trip to Seven Bridges

We will meet in the DCA parking lot at 9:30 am sharp to carpool to Seven Bridges in Greenwich for a guided tour. Seven Bridges includes beautifully sculptured grounds, a studio art gallery, as well as its architecturally significant bridges that adorn lovely ponds and streams situated amongst untouched natural areas. Native Perennials and Nature's Unseen Influences

Larry Weaner, whose design projects have been featred in national and international publications, lectures frequently throughout the United States. He owns his own design firm in Pennsylvania, is president of New Directions in the American Landscape, and is a past board member of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers. Please come and hear how alternative approaches in gardening can yield more easily maintained gardens that express the rich beauty of our native landscapes. And stay for lunch! Lunch fee $5. Program non-garden club- member guest fee: $15, $20 including lunch.

Daryl Beyers, Assistant Editor and Contributor to Fine Gardening Magazine will offer a glimpse via slide show into some of America's very best private gardens that have been featured in the Garden Conservancy's Open Days Program. Many of these gardens are rarely, if ever, seen by the public. Come and sneak a peak? Guests welcome. No charge.

New this year! Ellen Beery will lead us in creating beautiful candle-wreath centerpieces. In addition, please stay and make an additional centerpiece to be sold at the DCA holiday event. Bring your pruners, gloves, and your best holiday spirit. We'll provide the greens and decorative materials. (Reservations Required). Please RSVP by Friday, December 5th so that we can purchase the appropriate supplies. Call the DCA, 655-9050, for reservations! $15 fee for supplies, $20 for non Garden Club members.

Joint Meeting with the Garden Club of Darien

The special guest for our joint program with the Garden Club of Darien will be George Hawkins, "Cowboys, Spacemen, and a Theory of Almost Everything: How Responding to Global Warming Connects to Traffic Jams, Housing Prices, Property Taxes, and the Flood in My Creek." George Hawkins is currently the Director of the District Department of the Environment and a Professor of Environmental Law and Policy at Princeton University.

Kymrie Zaslow, award-wining creative floral designer specializing in Designs for Home and Entertaining, will bring us "Tips Tricks to maximizing impat and versatility." She will create three different arrangements which promise to brighten up the typically dreary February day with captivating and versatile floral designs. They will be auctioned off following the demonstration. Please come and enjoy a lovely morning with Kymrie and perhaps go home with a delightful creation. Non garden club member guest fee: $15

Rustic European Garden Basket Workshop

Peter Saverine, of Colony Florist in Greenwich, will lead us, step-by-step in making our own masterpieces for us to take home. Peter will bring the Fabulous flowers, mosses, flowering twigs, rustic baskets - everything needed (including his expertise) to create these designs, but please bring your own clippers. (Reservations Required) Please call by Monday, March 4th so that Peter can order the proper amount of materials. Call the DCA at 655-9050. The cost is $25 for supplies. (Non Garden Club guests $30). You will not be disappointed!

Organic Garden & Lawn Care

Lenny Scinto, of Designs by Lee in Stamford, will speak on Organic Plant and Lawn Care. Lenny has been featured on local radio call-in talk shows offering gardening tips and advice. His topic today will be caring for our plants and lawns using organic methods and practices. Bring your questions!

Annual Plant Sale

The Garden Club will hold its annual plant sale on Friday May 9th, just in time for spring planting. We will have wonderful plants grown in the DCA's own greenhouse by our greenhouse members, as well as perennials donated from the gardens of our garden club members. All members of the garden club are expected to donate time, as well as six perennials, or $20 to underwrite to cost of annuals that are purchased from a local grower. Experienced gardeners and designers will be on hand to offer advice and suggestions.
