HISTORY

A Sanctuary for Nature and Community

In 2012, the DCA Board of Directors launched a project to revitalize four acres of DCA property into a Bird Sanctuary & Nature Trail for public enjoyment. Spearheaded by Chris Filmer (former Darien Land Trust President), Sig Buchmayr (Darien Beautification Commission), and Cindy Ryan (DCA Board Member), the project was supported by dedicated volunteers, businesses, and local organizations.

The initiative involved extensive planning, with input from conservation experts and Audubon Connecticut, who conducted a detailed habitat assessment. Soil sample analyses guided planting decisions to create an inviting space for birds and visitors alike.

The DCA is deeply grateful to The Darien Foundation, whose generous grants in 2013 and 2018 funded the sanctuary’s creation, expansion, and enhancements — including the peaceful waterfall.

We also extend our thanks to the Eagle Scouts, Girl Scouts, and countless volunteers whose dedication continues to maintain this beautiful community treasure — a serene space enjoyed by thousands each year.

Our Mission & Core Values

The Darien Community Association fosters connection, learning, sustainability, and the preservation of green spaces, empowering our community through meaningful programs, initiatives, and environmental stewardship.
